MotorSport New Zealand joins with EVolocity to bring STEM students to motorsport

MotorSport New Zealand has partnered with Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) provider EVolocity to connect motorsport to the classroom through New Zealand.

EVolocity is a nationwide STEM program for Year 7 to 13 students that facilitates the design, build and competition of two-to-four-wheeled electric vehicles. A number of lucky students will now have the opportunity to further extend their experience by joining one of the world-leading Castrol Toyota Formula Regional Oceania teams at the remaining rounds of their championship.

“New Zealand is well known as a country of innovators and it’s great to be partnering with EVolocity to help develop our budding crew members,” said MotorSport New Zealand CEO Elton Goonan.

“We have produced some exceptional motorsport engineers and mechanics, stretching right back to the days of Bruce McLaren who of course founded the McLaren Formula 1 team and automotive empire. There are Kiwis all over the globe operating at the very highest level as engineers, mechanics and crew in all facets of motorsport.

“The opportunity on offer for these students is incredible and only possible thanks to Toyota GAZOO Racing New Zealand and their teams M2 Competition, MTEC Motorsport, Giles Motorsport and Kiwi Motorsport. All of whom share the same passion for developing the next generation of engineers and mechanics.”

Through the program, students are mentored in the full range of skill sets required to successfully design, build and race their vehicles. Everything from computer-aided design (CAD) to electronics and programming, welding and fabrication and even scrutineering and testing of their creations. Students then put their vehicles to the real test and compete against one another in regional events.

“EVolocity is thrilled to announce a partnership with MotorSport New Zealand. Our collaboration is a natural fit to provide exciting career pathways for young New Zealanders, by connecting STEM education with the world of motorsport.” Said Sarah Fitzgerald, EVolocity CEO.

“Along with the increasing popularity of e-motorsport in New Zealand, the industry offers a vast range of job opportunities in engineering and mechanics, and both our organisations are committed to inspiring and teaching New Zealand’s future generation of innovators and leaders, skills which will be invaluable to growing this sector.”

The first placement of EVolocity students will take place at Hampton Downs this weekend as part of the third round of the Castrol Toyota Formula Regional Oceania Championship.
